What Are Helicomatic Hubs/Freewheels? How To Remove/Install
Posted by on in Freewheels & CassettesDetails
I show how to identify, remove and install a Helico matic freewheel. Helicomatic hubs and freewheels were made by a French company name Maillard. They were mostly found on French made bikes, but were used on some early Trek bikes as well. The freewheel does not screw onto the hub like most freewheels, but is held on to the hub with a lock ring like a cassette. But the ratcheting mechanism is still in the freewheel as opposed to a cassette, where the ratcheting part is part of the hub (the freehub body).
